Giba Gonçalves

 

A native of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, Giba began his career as a dancer and percussionist in groups in Brazil and Europe (Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, Muzenza, Male Debale, Jimmy Cliff, Tupi Nago).

In 1989 he joined the band KAOMA and toured the world for two years. He then went on to perform at concerts around Europe with a variety of other bands.

In 1989 he moved to Paris where he became leader of Tambourlode.

In 1997 he found BATALA as a batucada style band with more than 80 percussionists. Since then Giba directed and composed all the music for Batala which has since grown around the world.

Giba Goncalves has also composed music for film/documentary "Code Unknown" by Michael Haneke starring Juliette Binoche (MK2 Productions). In 2000 he was assistant musical director of "Festival Latitudes Villette Brésil" and the show "Solstices, Carnavalcade de St. Denis".

Besides Batala, Giba is dedicated to contribute to all forms of Bahian culture.
